L’objectif de formation de la jeunesse réside ainsi pour partie par une mise au travail manuel de jeunes très majoritairement intellectuels. Si le travail manuel constitue l’un des fondements de la dimension communautaire des chantiers, il ne donne pas pour autant lieu à une réflexion pédagogique, en termes d’apprentissages par exemple, comme d’autres composantes de cette activité. Par son accessibilité, le travail manuel est davantage présenté comme un moyen de favoriser la rencontre de l’autre, qu’il ou elle soit volontaire ou bénéficiaire des interventions. International voluntary work camps, first developed after the Liberation of France by organizations with a variety of ideological backgrounds, involved young people from different countries carrying out community interest work. The aim was to train young people, the vast majority of whom were “intellectuals”, in part by getting them to undertake manual tasks. Although manual tasks were one of the cornerstones of the community dimension of work camps unlike other aspects they did not give rise to any pedagogical debate, in terms of learning for example.
